Pasadena City Hall Maternity Session – A few weeks ago we photographed a microwedding (Tiffany and Jay). At this particular micro wedding, we met one of Tiffany’s good friends, Lexy. She’s pregnant and unbeknownst to me was looking for a maternity photographer. She had used family and friends for photoshoots before but for her maternity pictures she wanted to try someone new. Since we were able to get Tiffany and Jay’s backyard wedding back to them in a timely manner, she saw what she liked and booked us a few days after the wedding.
Choosing a location
After going back and forth bouncing ideas with Lexy, we landed on Pasadena City Hall for their maternity photos. I say their because we decided to do it like a hybrid family/maternity session. Our family packages include up to 5 people in them so I was completely cool with splitting it up between a family session (with her husband and son) and doing plenty of individuals of her too. It’s a moment everyone should be sharing together, of course.
Best time to schedule a maternity session
We discussed what day of the week would work best for their maternity session. We typically try to book family, engagements, and maternity sessions during the week because there are less crowds anywhere you go. And we always shoot about an hour or so before sunset. Here is an article we wrote on what time is the best time to shoot. Of course we try to be as flexible as we can with days and when it comes to the beach we always check tides first, but time of day is one we try to persuade our couples to shoot closer to sunset. As you can see from the photos below; at Pasadena City Hall, you can see how the lighting goes from soft even light, to more dramatic colors as the day moves along
